Firestone to manage first US commercial offshore wind farm.

Firestone construction and engineering company, Flatiron Construction Corp., will manage the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound, off the coast of Massachusetts. The renewable energy project is the United State’s first commercial offshore wind farm. 

Construction of the 130 wind turbines is set to commence in 2013 and is expected to take 2 ½ years to complete, at an estimated costs of $2.5 billion dollars.  

Cape Wind Associates communications director Mark Rodgers estimates that there are 45 similar projects throughout the United States that are in the planning stages.
